The City of Marshall, MN has a great opportunity for a committed, team oriented, and highly motivated public administration college student to join the City Administrator’s Office as an Administrator Intern. The duties and responsibilities of the Administrator Intern are designed to further prepare the incumbent for a successful career in government. This is a paid internship position.
Proposed Hours/Rate of Pay
20 hours per week. Generally worked between 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., M-F., Flexible
$15-18 per hour, DOQ

June 1st through August 23rd
Essential Functions
- Assist with and provide research and analysis of special projects or government policies as requested.
- Attend community meetings, public hearings, press conferences, strategy-planning sessions and various department and staff meetings in order to learn about public services, policy-making, and the operations of local government.
- Explore government activities and attend various community events, take photographs, and prepare written content to document events for newsletters and social media.
- Provide administrative support to the administration department as well as greet citizens and assist them as needed.
- Collaborate with leaders and learn about various departments within City government such as finance, economic development, community development, police, fire, and more.
- Arrange accommodations for special programs, events, and activities for the City Council, Mayor, and City Administrator.
- Draft written correspondence as needed or requested.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service for the City Administrator and Mayor offices.
- Performs other duties as requested.

- Give students an opportunity to learn first-hand how city government works.
- Provide city council and leadership staff with additional staff support.
- Provide an opportunity for city council and staff to mentor future leaders for the City.
- Provide interns with valuable professional public service experience that will enhance their skills, competencies, and classroom experience.
Staff Mentorship / MCMA Member
The Intern will be under the mentorship of the City Administrator while performing duties of the position.
The City Administrator is a member of MCMA, has over 25 years of local government experience, with 19 of those years serving as the Chief Administrative Official of the local government organization. In addition, the City Administrator currently serves on the Coalition of Greater MN Cities Board and League of Mn Cities Board.
The City of Marshall has successfully mentored interns in the past; however, this would be the first intern under the MCMA program.
Minimum Education Requirements:
Current undergraduate or graduate level student studying in areas of public administration, planning, community development, or related field.
